Intro
An online Virtual-Reality training application where detective students can search and track evidence of a crime scene.

Process

Virtual reality is increasingly used by the Police Academy. Currently, eleven modules have been developed, of which VR Owl has helped with CPR, domestic violence and shooting training. In the last project, the Police Academy was looking for a method to train trace investigation, with several participants at the same time.

My task was to first create a concept document for this expansion in which the concept is explained and how it could work. After that I was given the task of setting up the Design Document.

The Concept Document

My task was to first create a concept document for this expansion in which the concept is explained and how it could work. There were a few things to keep in mind:

The maximum available computing power of the VR glasses, for example, it had to be tested whether the system could render all the students' flashlights.

The security of the lobby, the system must be watertight so that only the invited students can participate.

And finally the various functions of the teacher and students, such as placing and marking tracks, restarting the session, inviting students, etc.

The Design Document

After that I was given the task of setting up the Design Document. This specifies a number of things. The house style used in the VR application, the 3D models, the controls and finally an extensive flow of all functionalities. The police has its own visual style, and it had to be adopted seamlessly. With this assignment I especially learned to work in a structured way. In particular, the flow with all functionalities and the possible errors or outcomes that can occur took a lot of time to work out clearly and conveniently.

UI Design

I also got to work on the UI that the participant would see in the VR environment. As I said, there was a visual style that had to be followed, and this was also strictly controlled. With this assignment I had to learn to work consistently and efficiently on the UI elements. I liked this part of the assignment because there are a number of things you have to take into account, such as the Field of View of the participant and the readability of texts and buttons.

Result

With the Concept and Design document done, the team was able to convince the police to invest further in the project and continue to the next fase of the project.

It felt good to be able to make a big impact with such a large project, and it was also exciting to be given so much responsibility. Nevertheless, my supervisor had a lot of confidence in me and he also complimented me on my work.

I noticed that Ender was able to extract multiple ideas from previous concepts and apply them within this new concept, which really improved the result. - K. Damen, internship supervisor.
